AI visibility: what it means, and how to check yours

AI visibility

Try this before reading any further. Open ChatGPT and type the question your best customer would ask right before buying from you. Not your brand name. The actual question, phrased the way a real person would phrase it. Now read the answer. Is your company in there?

Most founders have never run that test. They know their Google rank by heart and have never once checked whether an AI tool mentions them at all. That gap has a name now: AI visibility. It is not the same thing as rank, and treating it that way is how a lot of companies are about to get quietly overtaken.

Why this is worth five minutes of your time today

Gartner projects that traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026, as AI tools absorb a growing share of the queries that used to land on a results page (Gartner, February 2024).

Read that again. A quarter of the searches that currently send you traffic may simply stop happening, replaced by a question typed straight into an AI tool instead. If you are not showing up in that answer, the traffic does not go missing. It goes to whoever the model decided to name.

AI visibility today spans five surfaces, and being strong on one says almost nothing about the other four:

  • ChatGPT, both the base model and its browsing mode, still the biggest single research surface
  • Perplexity, which is built from the ground up around live citation
  • Gemini, inside Google Search itself and the standalone app
  • Google AI Overviews, now sitting above the traditional results for a huge share of queries
  • Microsoft Copilot, pulling heavily from Bing's index across every Microsoft product

Running the actual test

Here is the version worth doing properly, not just the one question you tried at the top of this article.

See if AI search knows your brand.

Free audit. 2 minutes. No sales call.

  • Write down the ten questions your best customers ask before they buy, in their own words
  • Run every one through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini exactly as written
  • Note whether your brand gets named, ignored, or described incorrectly
  • Repeat the same ten questions for two competitors you actually lose deals to

The pattern that shows up almost every time is the same. A page ranking third or fourth on Google for the exact phrase a customer would type produces nothing across a dozen AI prompts.

That is not a small gap. It is usually the entire reason a competitor keeps showing up in conversations where you should have won.

What actually decides whether a brand gets named

Once you know where the gaps are, the fix comes down to four things a model is quietly checking every time it decides what to quote.

Specificity comes first. A page that says "fast onboarding" gets skipped. A page that says "teams are live in under 20 minutes" gets lifted, because there is something in that sentence a model can actually stand behind.

Structure matters almost as much. Content broken into clear, self-contained sections is far easier for a model to pull from than one long, winding paragraph that saves its point for the end.

Then there is corroboration, which trips up more brands than anything else on this list. If your homepage, your last press mention, and a review site all describe your product slightly differently, a model has three conflicting facts and often just drops the claim rather than pick a winner. And finally, recency.

A page that has not changed in two years is competing against one updated last month, and a growing number of these tools now pull from live content instead of leaning only on older training data.

Turning the test results into a fix list

Once you have run the test, the fixes tend to fall into a short, repeatable list:

  • Replace vague adjectives like "leading" or "trusted" with the real number behind them
  • Find and fix contradictions between your site, your press mentions, and third party reviews
  • Move your strongest sentence to the top of each section instead of burying it
  • Refresh anything untouched in the last year, even if it still ranks fine on Google
  • Build the comparison or definition page that matches how customers actually phrase the question

Build your AI visibility with Ande Media

We run this exact test for every new account before touching a single page, because guessing where the gap is wastes a quarter of budget that a real audit would have caught in a week.

  • Test your brand against real customer questions across every major AI surface
  • Benchmark your visibility against named competitors, side by side
  • Rewrite priority pages using the four factors that actually move citation
  • Track visibility monthly, separate from organic rank
  • Report on where you are gaining ground and where a competitor still wins

Test your AI visibility with Ande Media. See exactly where your brand stands today, before deciding what to fix first.

Frequently asked questions

No. Rank measures position on a results page. AI visibility measures whether a brand gets named inside an AI-generated answer, which depends on different signals entirely.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews currently drive the largest share of AI-assisted research, so all four are worth tracking separately.

Monthly is a reasonable baseline for a growing brand, since AI tools update their retrieval and citation behavior frequently.

Yes. Citation rewards specific, checkable claims over brand size, so a smaller brand with sharper content can outperform a larger one with vaguer pages.
